4. EDXRS spectra

EDXRS spectra represent the detected x-rays, sorted out by energies. Based on the knowledge on the main types of interactions of x-ray with matter and associated properties, it is easy to anticipate that each EDXRS spectrum may have different structure and view.

Before clicking on the arrows below, try to anticipate which feature in the measured spectrum depends on each of the properties listed in the left column:

• The type of excitation source		Shape of the spectrum background continuum
• The maximum energy of the excitation source		Interval of energy in the measured spectrum
• The type and main energy of excitation		The intensity of the characteristic peaks
• The type of detector		Energy resolution and width of the peaks
• The constituent elements		Presence and intensity of characteristic emission peaks
• The sample matrix		Intensity of the scatter and ratio of coherent to incoherent scatter peaks in EDXRF
