Introduction to in-situ techniques for radiological characterization of sites

7.3 Measurement strategies

The selection of a strategy for the measurements and its integration into the overall project has an impact on the planning and implementation processes. The determination of the strategies can have a significant impact on safety, staffing and social issues, as well as on determining the volume of the wastes, the decommissioning/remediation strategies and associated costs.

For the measurement strategies one should determine the most likely affected environmental compartments and probable migration pathways. Such specifics have to be taken into account to make a proper selection of the devices needed to investigate the contaminants of concern by performing in situ measurements. The same concerns have to be addressed in case of an incident or accident related releases of COC.

This course provides general recommendations for the use of in-situ techniques, and some specific advices for specific survey plans are given in the following subsections.
